Following her award-winning Fringe debut and sell-out run, Chelsea Birkby is back with a meditation on lust for life. Playfully combining pop culture and philosophy in her ‘smart and silly’ show, Chelsea unpacks being in the moment, desire and also ass.
Who is this show for?
YOU if you love jokey jokes, heart, the semiotics of ass and intellectualising feelings.
How does it feel to be returning to the Edinburgh Fringe?
Returning to the fringe is a joy. But the kind of joy that scares you hehe.
This is my second show and I was so pleased with how the first one went, I just hope lots of people come and like this even more!
Have you got any tips for comedians going up to the festival for the first time?
You don’t need that many flyers, I promise.
Be really nice to your venue staff, they work looong days.
It’s okay to be scared! I nearly said ‘no’ to going on Radio 5 Live as I was worried about thousands of people listening to what I was just making up on the spot. But it ended up being an absolute blast. Laughing with Nihal Arthanayake in the Speigeltent was one of the highlights of my Fringe. Also, he told me on air it’s actually hundreds of thousands of people. I screamed.
Who are the funny women you would recommend seeing in Edinburgh this year?
Celya AB is on fire right now, Kitty and Shirley’s Teen Dream Magazine Comedy Sleepover is going to be the most fun hour for the girlies* (*girlies of all genders), Caitriona Dowden is a one-off and making her debut this year, I always try and see Olga Koch’s shows, Micky Overman forever, OMG so many!
Chelsea Birkby: This is Life, Cheeky Cheeky will be at Just The Tonic – JustOut of the Box from 1st – 25th August (not 12th) 9.20pm. Get tickets here.
