Hello 90’s nostalgia at its absolute finest! Saving Britney is so much more than “an hour of Britney references” it is also DRIPPING with sense memories stored in the deepest depths of your millennial psyche, tied in beautifully to every element of Roushbaiani’s seamless storytelling.
Full disclosure, I am not a Britney fan (sorry Shereen!) but good gravy it did not matter. As soon as I walked into the Bluebell at Underbelly I was instantly transported from the outside of a purple metal container in pouring Scottish rain and into the sensory overload of my best mate’s bedroom when I was a girl…not yet a woman.

This is Jean’s story who lived in parallel to the teenage megastar who takes us through 173 reasons why she believes she is cosmically connected to B. It was heartbreaking, empowering, funny and full to the brim with energy. Roushbaiani also uses her flawless physical abilities to glide through time-lines and scenarios, only ever contrasting this with the stringent reporter character who effortlessly delivered the most shocking news about Britney’s life.
While, at times, Jean’s infatuation is as sickly-sweet as Britney’s ‘Fantasy’ range, I cared so deeply about her journey, life traumas and personal development that she was completely forgiven.
If you grew up loving Britney, go see this show. If you grew up not really understanding the hype, go see this show. If you’re a millennial and want to be reunited with bubble bags, a Walkman and groovy chick (I know, I totally forgot about that gal too!) whilst being thoroughly entertained…go see this show!
You can watch Saving Britney at The Bluebell, Underbelly until 30th August. Tickets here!
