As Lockdown made its victory lap around England last week, our Comedy Workout series made a triumphant return with remarkable timing to connect comedy professionals and lovers. As much as I wish I could take credit for it, it was another classic 2020 plot twist.
It’s no secret that one of the biggest achievements this year was adapting the Funny Women Awards to 2020, both from our team and the performers and industry who came to help make it happen. So it would be fitting that for this session I spoke with Awards Director Becky Singh, alongside this year’s Stage Award winner Izzy Askwith and runner up Eryn Tett. We discussed stand up, awards success, and the daunting passage that is transferring from live performances to a digital screen to name a few topics.
Having rounded off the evening with some amazing open spot performances from Colleen Cheetham-Gerrad, Rachael Amesbury and Priyangee Guha, it was proven that nothing is going to stop our talent pool growing. What’s more, we also received feedback for the night was heartwarming and proved exactly why the Comedy Workout space is more important than ever.
Though England is closing down, it seems that the Comedy Workout and Funny Women as a whole can’t but widen its reach. In attendance of the event we had participants across the country, but also branching out to Iceland and even all the way in Australia, which is reflective of our exciting plans to bring to you a more international Funny Women in the coming months.
If you missed out on last week, the Comedy Workout isn’t slowing down anytime soon, and we already have our next two months live on the website, with interactive and thoughtful sessions to help keep up creativity, answer burning industry questions, and above all remind ourselves that we are all in this together. You can also join the conversation anytime via our Community Facebook page, filled with opportunities and news to help us all keep supporting each other.
