The Bumswing starts with Sofie Hagen telling us exactly what will happen in the next hour. It’s not a show about trauma, she spent the last three years retraumatising herself by talking over and over again about the things that hurt her. This is a light show.
We spend the next few minutes, learning about all the ways Denmark is cooler than the UK and how their Queen is way cooler than the British monarch. We learn how Sofie’s memory is moody and only lets her remember some things, while making up stories to cover up the things that really happened, be it a traumatic experience, or just something that embarrasses her, or the third wheel at that romantic moment. We also learn everything about that sex holiday in Swansea, even if Sofie herself doesn’t quite remember it.
The show is engaging storytelling, the same kind of storytelling we got used to in her podcasts. She does lie to us at the start, and there’s one more thing that happens before the show ends, that she never told us about, and even denied. Maybe her memory playing tricks again. The show ends with some trauma, but it’s swiftly over after that.
