Love will always triumph over evil and it would be good to have a superhero on hand to destroy the baddies. In the aftermath of the attacks on London last night when our earthly powers failed to stop the terror and death, the new blockbuster Women Woman movie offers up a message of hope in a real world gone mad.
It’s a timeless theme and Wonder Woman does indeed save the world fighting on the frontline of a reimagined First World War. She sacrifices love for duty and manages to keep her hair and make-up intact. But then if you are the daughter of an Amazon queen and a deity, it’s all in a day’s work.
Coming from her cosseted regal upbringing as princess of the Amazons on a utopian island, Diana leaves to fulfil her destiny as Wonder Woman when she gets a glimpse of the ugly ‘real’ world being ravaged by war. Mankind is saved but love and family are sacrificed.
In business, the notion of channeling our inner Wonder Woman has become a popular strategy for strength, resilience and confidence. Indeed, after Thursday night’s preview courtesy of Women in Film & Television UK, I left the cinema feeling empowered and uplifted, ready to take on the world.
Escapism will always play its part in adversity and unlike its comic strip predecessor this movie is dark and classy with a kick ass soundtrack. There is something comforting about the concept of a god-killing sword and an impervious shield being put into the right hands to protect us from evil, even if it only lasts for a couple of hours in the cinema.
I am just sad today that the reality of terrorism challenges us all at the deepest most human level. So, let us dig deep for our inner Wonder Woman to face up to the challenges of the real world and whatever it may bring us over the coming weeks.
Go out and vote on Thursday 8th June – remember that the Suffragettes were the original ‘wonder women’ who found the inner strength to fight for the right for all of us women to vote. We owe them.
And don’t let the threat of terrorism stop you going out to live life to the full. Go see a movie in the cinema, a play in the theatre or a live music or comedy gig. Otherwise the baddies win.
