Raised By Kickstarter

It might be cancelled but the sitcom penned by Caitlin and Caz Moran, Raised By Wolves, is continuing its unconventional storyline with a Kickstarter campaign to fund a third series.

With a thwacking £320,000 target, if the Kickstarter is successful this will be the first British show to be crowdfunded, rewards range from a rare thank-you from Della, to a trip to the midlands to meet the cast, a chat with Caitlin, to a credit at the end of the first episode and Germaine badges in between.

Raised by Wolves star and 2015 Funny Women Awards finalist Helen Monks told us: “It’s a wee bit scary, because this has never been done before in the UK. But if we pull it off it will be scary in a ‘first man on the moon’ kind of way, as opposed to an Apollo 13 kind of way. But instead of a man we have women (apart from for Grampy, of course). And instead of on the moon, we’re in Wolverhampton (unless Germaine is inclined to show the world her ‘four buttocks’ again. Which, actually, is highly likely). We decided that we still have so much story that needs telling, jokes that need cracking and cheese that needs eating.

It’s not just that the show has more to say, but who it speaks for, as Helen said: “Raised by Wolves has hit a nerve with people. Because where else on telly do you see a whole bunch of working class women from the Midlands being smart, fierce and very funny whilst remaining constantly ON FLEEK?

“Where else do you see a single mum of six being really FRIGGING BAD ASS? A teenage girl who actually LOVES HERSELF? A granddad who listens to Woman’s Hour and isn’t afraid to shed a tear to the soundtrack of Barbra Streisand? Wolves makes people feel a little bit less like an outsider and a little bit more part of the gang. Now, whenever I feel overwhelmed by life, I just channel my inner Germaine or think ‘what would Della do?'”

It also lets the Midlands have its time in the sun: “It’s sad that there wasn’t space for us on the mainstream telly networks. But god knows we’re used to that. Not just as women, not just as working class women, but as working class women from the Midlands. The poor Midlands. We never get a bloody look in. For some yammy-prejudice reason we’ve never been offered a share of the pie and when we are, it’s grudgingly. But that’s old news. The new news is, we don’t need your sympathy slice now – we can bake our own pie. And my god, is it going to be delicious!”

The award-winning show, which is currently being adapted for America by Diablo Cody, was cancelled by Channel 4 earlier this year, within a month 20,000 people had joined the Raised by Wolves Facebook page and thousands more signed up to the Rebel Alliance email set up by the Moran sisters. The project includes two paid internships in writing and TV production.

However, if they don’t raise the cash Helen does have a back up plan: “… then we’ll just be like Apollo 13. But hey, it may have been a historical failure and quite stressful for everyone involved, but nobody died. And in the future, maybe Ron Howard will make the whole saga into a pretty great movie. BAGSY I get played by Tom Hanks.”
