Friday night was a great celebration of women's achievements at the 2013 annual Sky Women in Film and Television Awards at the London Hilton on Park lane. Almost 1000 of film and TV's top industry guests attended to watch the outrageously funny Ruby Wax host the proceedings.
Actress Sheridan Smith was awarded the MAC Best Performance Award in recognition of her performance in 'Mrs Biggs'. One of our favourite TV historians Mary Beard was presented with The NEP Visions Presenter Award by Peter Capaldi. The Award was in honour of Mary's great contribution as one of televisions small number of women academics – no mean feat considering the online abuse from Twitter trolls she received earlier in the year.
The UK's first regular woman news reader, Angela Rippon was honoured with the EON Productions Lifetime Achievement Award for her outstanding contribution to the industry of over 50 years.
The ENVY Producer Award was won by Pippa Harris, executive producer of much loves BBC drama series 'Call the Midwife' and Sally Wainwright was presented with The Technicolor Writing Award for 'Last Tango in Halifax', which she both wrote and created.
WFTV CEO Kate Kinninmont commented that: “This year’s winners are an outstanding group of women. I’m particularly delighted to see women coming to the fore in really tough areas, whether it’s Anna Hall winning for her work on British sex gangs, Penny Woolcock taking on gang culture in Birmingham or Ronke Phillips unearthing the true identity of the poor tortured boy previously known only as ‘the torso in the Thames’. Year after year these awards celebrate creativity and excellence – there is no shortage of talented women in film and television.”
