Women in the spotlight on first Live Comedy Day!
Kelly Griffiths
Yesterday we took centre stage in London to celebrate the first ever Live Comedy Day and spent 12 hours connecting Funny Women, supporting the hilarious Gobby Girls and hosting spectacular events.
Our first Comedy Brunch: Glitter Edition kicked off the day at the glamorous Groucho Club, Soho hosted by Lucy Ryan, who spoke with three inspiring, thought provoking and engaging women who all had different connections with comedy.
Louise Gold shared her incredible experiences as an actor on stage and screen and treated us to a short puppetry workshop as she talked about being one of Jim Henson’s original puppeteers on The Muppet Show.
Jaz Ampaw-Farr, inspired us with her journey from teacher to award-winning public speaker, discussed her new book Because of You, This is Me (available on Amazon) and explained how taking part in the Glitter Challenge has helped shape her work as a key note speaker.
And finally Christine Rose revealed what it’s like to write for some of the UK’s leading comedy talent on stage and screen. All hosted by the glamorous Lucy Ryan who brought the event together seamlessly and encouraged the connections made after the panel.
Next up we enjoyed and supported the hilarious sketch show, Gobby Girls: The After Party, now running at the Soho Theatre every evening until Saturday 4th April. I HIGHLY recommend you grab a ticket as one of the shows is completely sold out. It’s no surprise, these women are bringing countless, fast paced hilarious sketches complete with musical numbers, Disney princesses and vaginas…yep, actual vaginas. Go see for yourself!
Lastly we completed our Live Comedy Day celebrations at the inconic Comedy Store London bringing an incredibly diverse and varied line up of acts including: Grace Campbell, Barbara Nice, Siblings, Spring Day, Sian Davies, Suzy Bennett, Madeleine Brettingham, Maple Zuo, Ivy Paige and ‘Zoe’ complete with a 30-minute showcase of sketches from the Gobby Girls. The show was hosted by the scatty and endearing Shaparak (Shappi) Khorsandi.
The atmosphere at the Comedy Store was electric and a particular highlight for me was watching 2025 Funny Women Stage Award finalist Madeleine Brettingham and winner ‘Zoe’ (Nicola Mantalios) completely own the space. As a Midlander, it would be remiss of me not to mention the inimitable ‘Barbara Nice’ (Janice Connolly) who never fails to bring the party and have everyone in stitches.
My comedy cup runneth over with joy, laughter, and new connections all in the name of Funny Women, leading the way and putting the spotlight on some of the best grassroots comedy in the country.
We were asked to celebrate Live Comedy Day and, girl, did we ever deliver!
Both the Comedy Brunch and Funny Women Live were raising funds for The Glitter Project Funny Women’s incredible outreach initiative to support women through creativity and comedy. Thanks to those of you who bought a ticket or made a donation. You can still do so using this link HERE.

Q&A: Leila Navabi, Relay
Relay is a punk-musical one-woman show about love, family and chaos. It starts with a very unusual question: how do you make a baby with your partner, your best friend as sperm donor, and his boyfriend cheering from the side-lines?
