Please help us with this important industry survey. CRAFT, the Comedy Representation & Artform Trust, is the first dedicated national body for the entire comedy industry ecosystem and is supporting The Women & Equalities Committee’s inquiry into Misogyny in Comedy with an independent survey to gather evidence.
INDUSTRY SURVEY: MISOGYNY IN COMEDY
The inquiry mainly focuses on the live comedy environment but recognises the links across digital, broadcast, streaming, visual and illustrative work and the wider businesses around live comedy.
Survey closes midnight Monday 20th April.
The findings will be revealed at a second evidence session to the Women and Equalities Committee (WEC). Yesterday Comedian and writer Ola Labib, comedian and Co-Founder of Get Off Live Comedy Nina Gilligan and journalist Rachael Healy gave evidence to the first session exploring the experiences of women in live comedy.
The session examined the representation of women across the sector, including those from ethnic and religious minority backgrounds, and considered the barriers they face in building a career in live comedy.
Discussion also focused on the gender pay gap, the challenges associated with freelance work and women’s safety in live comedy, including experiences of harassment and abuse.
The WEC is examining the new duty on employers to protect staff from third‑party harassment, and the failure to include freelancers, and the Government’s proposed legislative change to ban non‑disclosure agreements in cases of harassment and abuse.
The session raised the question about the potential role of independent bodies, regulators, and trade unions in strengthening protections and improving working conditions to support female comedians.
The survey is your opportunity to comment on these important issues and the existence of misogyny in the comedy industry. Please respond so that data can be fed into the second session later this month. Details to be announced.
