Funny Women is proud to be supporting the Three Butterflies Lunch on Friday 9th November. Organised by WomanKind, the Lunch is an annual fundraising event held to help empower women around the world to transform their lives and their communities. The event brings together trailblazing women who have made an impact in their field, aspiring future leaders, inspiring women leaders from Womankind's partner organisations and anyone else wishing to celebrate and support the empowerment of women worldwide.
This year, Germaine Greer is the keynote speaker, Jan Ravens is performing the role of Master of Ceremonies and Andi Osho, Funny Women winner 2007, is providing the entertainment.
The name 'Three Butterflies' comes from the Mirabal sisters, Minerva, Maria Teresa, and Patria, who opposed the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. Born into a well-off family, they had comfortable lives, but felt they could not ignore the horrors of the regime and bravely spoke out, costing them their lives. In 1960 they were murdered by the regime.
The Mirabal sisters, and the butterfly image have become symbols of courage, dignity and strength for women worldwide.
WomanKind World regularly holds fundraising events in order to support today's butterflies. Find out how to get involved HERE.
