Fiona Allen has previously won two International Emmys, The Bronze Rose d’Or, and the Rockie Awards Banff for Smack the Pony. Smack the Pony has been nominated three times for a BAFTA (but they never gave them one).
Tell us about your comedy style.
I would describe my comedy style as chatty observational. Occasionally acerbic and a bit silly.
What is your show about and where can we see it?
My show is about spending one whole day trying to come up with the perfect White Lie to get out of a social gathering. Running out of time and patience, I encounter every obstacle a day can throw at me. I have to confront my worst fear of a neighbour’s party. It’s a fate worse than death and the clock is ticking. I’m going to have to Wargame it… Honestly.
I’ll be performing White Lies from 5th–29th August in The Gilded Balloon Teviot.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I get my inspiration from everyday life. The people I meet and things that I observe around me doing everyday things and mundane stuff. Things are never quite the same as they appear in suburbia, once you scratch the surface.
How does it feel to be returning to the Edinburgh Fringe?
It feels great to be returning to The Edinburgh Fringe for my second ever solo show. (I was there last August but that was with my Smack the Pony mates to do a live show and also being interviewed by the fabulous Kirsty Wark.) I had a great time the first time so couldn’t resist coming back. A different show this time in that it is set in one day.
Have you got any tips for comedians going to the festival for the first time?
I think I’d say go to as many shows as you can as there are so many fabulous, talented people to watch.
What’s next for you?
I’ve recently been filming my new acting role as the new Captain of the Ship in The Good Ship Murder. This has been in Malta and on an actual cruise ship and around The Med. It’s been a lot of fun with a lovely cast and amazing crew. And more sunshine than I could have dreamt of. I’ve been learning a lot about ships and it’s very interesting stuff. Apparently ‘that bit at the front’ is called The Bridge… and not ‘that bit at the front.’ I’m now fluent in ship speak ha!
