From co-founding Screamers, the UK’s very first weekly LGBTQ+ stand-up night in the 1990s, to selling out Brighton Fringe with Menopause Bingo, Ali Jay has spent decades proving that comedy is best served joyful, high-energy, and gloriously ridiculous.
Now, she is bringing that wealth of experience, mischief, and passion to her new role as Funny Women’s Brighton Producer. Deeply rooted in the seaside city’s creative scene as a performer, producer, and mentor, Ali is on a mission to keep sharing the joy and elevating underrepresented voices through Funny Women Live in Brighton. We caught up with the comedy trailblazer to chat about her incredible journey, her upcoming solo show, and why having fun is the ultimate secret weapon for anyone starting out.
How did you get into comedy/writing/producing etc?
I originally thought acting was the path for me, but that changed pretty quickly once I started working in holiday camps and got a mic in my hand. Since then, I’ve spent many years working across stand-up, sketch comedy and improv, as well as producing shows and running comedy courses here in Brighton. Back in the 1990s, I was co-host and producer of Screamers, the UK’s first weekly LGBTQ+ stand-up comedy night, alongside Kit Green.
Tell us about your comedy style.
I’d describe my comedy style as joyful, high-energy and gloriously ridiculous.
What do you love about comedy/writing/producing etc?
Quite simply, I love laughing and being around funny people. There’s something very special about sharing joy – even if, behind the scenes, comedians are a serious bunch.
What have you been up to recently?
I’ve just completed shows at Brighton Fringe. Each year, I host and produce the Queer Comedy Showcase, championing brilliant new LGBTQ+ acts, and once again, we sold out and picked up five-star audience reviews. I also created Menopause Bingo which was, naturally, the hottest ticket in town.

Any advice for those starting out or taking their first show to Edinburgh or another festival?
Don’t forget to have fun. It sounds simple, but that’s the bit people often lose sight of when they’re busy worrying about getting everything right. Trust your voice, keep going, and remember that experience is the best teacher.
What’s next for you?
I’m developing a solo show that pushes me well beyond my comfort zone. Turning 60 next year feels like the perfect moment to bring a little more maturity to my work, while hopefully keeping the mischief intact. I’m also thrilled to be joining development workshops later this year with the amazing Bryony Kimmings.
Who are your favourite Funny Women?
Oh, so many: Victoria Wood, Joan Rivers, Caroline Aherne, Tina Fey, French and Saunders, Gina Yashere, Zoe Lyons, Diane Morgan, Kathy Burke, Leslie Jones and Aisling Bea, for starters. I could go on and on – there are so many fabulously funny women out there.
The next Funny Women Live in Brighton is at Komedia on Saturday 27th June. More information and tickets can be found here!
