Hi Laurie, can you tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Laurie Magers, I’m a Filipino writer, actor, and director based in LA. I began my career as a competitive poet, then trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater where I am currently the Artistic Director of Sketch Comedy. My recent TV credits include Netflix’s ”Obliterated” and upcoming Netflix animated series “Mating Season” from the creators of “Big Mouth.”
Cool, so tell us about your show…
Do You Accept These Charges? is a true, narrative solo comedy show about the time I dated a violent incarcerated multi-felon whom I met when he was on parole and continued to date after he was re-imprisoned. The format is a multimedia mix of storytelling and theater. I take the audience through the story of the relationship, pre- and post-lock up, from visits to prison letters to drug smuggling to uncovering the darkest of his charges. It explores themes of love addiction, abuse, sexuality, and the complexities of the American prison system, but don’t worry, it’s hilarious.
What’s it like to watch your show?
It feels a lot like being inside the relationship with me. Constant confusion and emotional whiplash.
How does it feel to be going to the Fringe for the first time?
I’m elated to be going to Fringe for the first time. I’ve heard so many stories about what a behemoth the festival is and how I really must prepare myself. I’m also so excited to spend an extended period of time in the city. I’ve visited Edinburgh before but only for a few days, and not during festival season. Overall, I’m buzzing with a mix of fear and excitement. It’s like a combo of gearing up to climb Mount Everest and trying to go to bed the night before going to Disneyland.
Have you got any tips for comedians going up to the festival for the first time?
I’m packing a portable nebulizer to make sure my vocal cords stay lubed up and ready to go. I’ve also been making sure to connect with other Americans I know who are going to the festival so we can cross-promote, share networks, and hang out when we get there!
Who are the funny women you would recommend seeing in Edinburgh this year?
Molly Sharpe whose taking her show “Murder Oops!” is a must see. Her show is absolutely unhinged in the best way. Also Beth May and Bryn Woznicki.
You can find Laurie and DO YOU ACCEPT THESE CHARGES? at the Pleasance from the 30th July – 24th August. Get more information and tickets here.
