Lucy Beaumont is currently on her second UK wide tour, with her show The Trouble & Strife!. Beaumont has appeared on the most recent series of Taskmaster and wrote and starred in the sitcom Meet the Richardsons, so it’s safe to say she’s been busy! Don’t let Beaumont’s soft voice and gentle demeanour mislead you, rest assured, her meandering stand up tales and punch lines often have plenty of bite, and there are more than a few memorable examples of this in her show, including: describing a train toilet incident as a ‘Mr. Whippy’; comparing breastfeeding to water guns at a funfair; and admitting a leery woman who got her tits out at a bar (it turns out, in an attempt to literally stop the decks spinning) was in fact her mum. This winning combination of sharp punchlines and softly spoken delivery only heightens the comedy, and at Beaumont’s London performance at Bloomsbury Theatre last night (Weds 2nd November), had the audience in pieces.
Beaumont has a traditional style of stand up with a focus on story telling, but likes to surprise us with sometimes silly, sometimes shocking ends of tales, which as she says herself, often sound too ridiculous to be true, making her the perfect returning guest on Would I Lie To You? (revealing that the producers have ‘never had’ someone on the show with so many stories that sound like they didn’t happen). Perhaps what also makes Beaumont the perfect WILTY contestant is that the audience immediately trusts her – which comes across best in a story about a fan momentarily handing her her baby while she ran back to her car for her phone.
Beaumont’s comedy covers her day to day life – including moving to Sheffield from Hull, and navigating the differences in her, John’s and their children’s upbringing – and focuses on the funny absurdities of the everyday. One of her favourite examples of this, is some particularly odd headlines from the news outlet Hull Live, which she draws on to construct a hilarious song that the audience joins in on, to the tune of the ‘12 Days of Christmas’. Some favourite moments of mine from the show, include Lucy’s description of her telly watching habits, that exclusively teach her both how to dispose of a body, and also what to plant on top of it, and some hilarious quotes from her mum about teeth.
Beaumont is on tour all around the country until April 2024, you can grab tickets here.
