September signals back to school, the start of a new season (in London’s case, the official start of summer 2023 in delightful 32 degree heat), and end of Fringe madness for another year. What better way to get in the September spirit than booking in some fantastic comedy shows, and of course, hearing all about our Funny Women Awards 2023…

KATE BERLANT: KATE

Thurs 31 Aug – 30 Sept, @ 7:30 PM, Soho Theatre

You may know Kate Berlant (IG) from her various acting, writing and producing roles in film and TV, to name a few: writer for Cinnamon in the Wind, Would It Kill You To Laugh?, as well as winning the American version of Taskmaster, and appearing in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Don’t Worry Darling. Berlant performed her show Kate in New York last year to critical acclaim, now bringing a month-long run of the show to Soho Theatre. To top it all off, the show is directed by Bo Burnham (Inside). LOU WALL: LOU WALL VS THE INTERNET

Mon 18-23 Sept @ 9:00 PM, Soho Theatre

If you like comedy songs, mile-a-minute jokes, and breaking into a chaotic 4th dimension (and by this I mean, the technologically obsessed world that today’s millennials inhabit), go and see this show. Lou Wall’s show is an absolute riot – an immaculately crafted one at that – with not a single second wasted. For those that have seen it, expect Do Revenge, but comedy (and better…)

DAWN FRENCH, DAWN FRENCH IS A HUGE TWAT

Thurs 21 Sept- 21 Oct @ 7:30 PM, London Palladium

The legendary Dawn French is coming to the London Palladium this September for a month-long run of her latest show: Dawn French Is A Huge Twat (*disclaimer* I don not agree with this statement…). From capturing our hearts in her most famous roles in The Vicar of Dibley and French and Saunders, catch French as she talks about her 40 year long entertainment career, focusing on the best socially awkward and mortifying moments in life that we all love….

LAURA RAMOSO: FRANCES

Tues 19-30 Sept @ 9:15 PM, Soho Theatre

Off the back of sold out Fringe performances, Laura Ramoso brings her show to Soho theatre. Expect high energy, some sketch, comedy characters (including Italian Dad, Geman Mom and The Three Girls Who Just Got Back From Europe), with a dash of improv thrown in for good measure.

AMY WEBBER: NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE

Weds 6 Sept @ 6:30 PM, The Bill Murray

Fresh off the back of selling out half her Fringe run, and armed with a mini keyboard and an opera degree, Amy Webber brings her show to London, and it’s all about looking for a new job. Expect comedy songs, impressions, and an operatic singing voice.

CHLOE RADCLIFFE: CHEAT

Off the back of a full Fringe run, US-based stand-up Chloe Radcliffe performs Cheat, about unveiling a secret that most people keep to themselves: that she’s cheated in almost every relationship. Radcliffe’s frank admissions have led to her discovering that infidelity is more common than we’d like to admit. Radcliffe has written on and starred in Soderburgh’s upcoming mini-series project, made her Comedy Central stand-up debut last spring, and was a writer on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

LUCY BEAUMONT: WORK IN PROGRESS

Lucy Beaumont is an award winning comic, with a shed load of telly credits, including: appearing on The Jonathan Ross Show, Cats Does Countdown and writing for Meet The Richardsons to name a few. Catch her WIP hour at Top Secret Comedy club as she tries out new material for her upcoming tour.

Comedy Shorts Award Entry Requirements

The deadline for registration for the Comedy Shorts Award has passed.

Funny Women NextUp…Comedy Shorts Award

Are you a budding Director? Producer? Screenwriter? Are you collaborating with friends to make a funny video? Then we are looking for YOU!

If you have a short film or sketch that you think is hilarious, then enter your work for our Comedy Shorts Award to be in with a chance of winning some life-changing support and mentoring from comedy professionals.

WHAT KIND OF FILM ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

A 1- 6 minute film that can take the form of anything comical. It’s a great opportunity to show us your creative flair and have fun!

WHO CAN ENTER?

This award is open to all women filmmakers and content developers. The film must be an original narrative created, produced and devised by a woman, or women, although male cast and crew members are allowed.

ARE THERE ANY ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR MY FILM?

Yes – we require all films to be 6 minutes or under, to be entirely original dialogue, to not feature brand logos and most importantly, to only use music with the written consent of the performer and/or publisher either personally or via the PRS system https://www.prsformusic.com/ .

WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH MY FILM?

We will broadcast selected entries on our Funny Women YouTube channel and social media (so keep an eye out) and the top 10 finalists’ films will also hosted on a dedicated Funny Women Comedy Shorts Awards page on our website. We will also broadcast the final 3 entries as part of the grand final night.

HOW IS IT JUDGED?

Films are judged for production, concept, delivery/performance, creativity, writing and overall funniness. The top 10 films are then viewed by an independent judging panel of top television and film industry professionals who will choose one overall winner and two runners up. The final three will be invited to attend the grand final in London on the 23rd September.
