Una Stubbs, the actor known and loved for her parts in some of the best-loved British TV shows has died aged 84.
Stubbs came into the public eye starring in Cliff Richard’s 1963 film Summer Holiday before playing Alf Garnett’s much-mithered daughter Rita in the sitcom Till Death Us Do Part. Stubbs went on to appear in shows such as Worzel Gummidge as Aunt Sally, The Worst Witch as Miss Bat, and Sherlock as landlady Mrs. Hudson.
Sherlock co-creator Mark Gattiss tweeted: “It was one of the great joys of my life to work so closely with and to adore Una Stubbs. She was a wonderful, wonderful woman and a great and serenely graceful actor. Mischief was in her blood. We were so blessed that she became our imperishable Mrs Hudson. Goodbye, darling,”
Her agent Rebecca Blond described Stubbs as “wickedly funny” and “graceful, gracious and kind and constant friend”.
In a statement, her sons Joe and Christian Henson and Jason Gilmore said: “Mum passed away quietly today with her family around her, in Edinburgh. We ask for privacy and understanding at this most difficult and sad of times.”
