This is my second year producing a Funny Women Awards category and I couldn’t be prouder to be a part of the Awards if I tried. Last year I produced the Comedy Shorts Award, where the amazing Nikola McMurtrie won for the brilliant Karaoke: Behind the Lyrics.

I was so pleased to be asked to produce an Awards category this year too! I just love the ethos of the Funny Women Awards, how there’s nothing to lose in applying or nominating yourself and how it’s open to people no matter where they are in the world. I think last year’s Awards were a trailblazer in that respect. Because we were all stuck at home for most of it, Zoom tapes and front-room gigs became the norm! I mean, we even held our semi-finals last year on Zoom – how amazing is that?!

I’m producing the Comedy Content Creator Award this year, a brand new category for 2021 and I think it’s one that’s really needed right now. There are so many hidden gems of talent who are out there creating comedy on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, YouTube and everywhere else in between, and we’re passionate about showcasing and giving a platform to those people this year.

In our Comedy Content Creator entries, I’d love to see the honest originality that I know people are capable of, and which being on a social media platform can bring. And [almost – we have rules, you know!] nothing’s off the table – the weirdest, wonderfulest of entries are totally welcome in this diverse and exciting category. We want to hear from people who aren’t signed to any agent or networks at the moment, and we want to see the raw and funny performances, sketches or shows that they are giving to their followers and audiences.

The Comedy Content Creator Award is a public vote, so you can nominate yourself, that’s no problem, but it’s then down to you to promote the award to those that will also nominate you. After the deadline, we’ll total up who has the most votes and they will be our winner.

If you’re thinking about entering, my only advice will be to DO IT! You have absolutely nothing to lose in nominating yourself for this Award – look, even if you nominate yourself and ask your Mum to nominate you too, what’s the worst that’s going to happen!?

Q&A: Leila Navabi, Relay

Relay is a punk-musical one-woman show about love, family and chaos. It starts with a very unusual question: how do you make a baby with your partner, your best friend as sperm donor, and his boyfriend cheering from the side-lines?
