The actor and Carry On star Barbara Windsor has died aged 83. Her husband of 20 years, Scott Mitchell, said she died peacefully in a London care home, “I’ve lost my wife, my best friend and soul mate and my heart or life will never feel the same without you.” The Eastender had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2014 and became an ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Society.
Barbara Windsor appeared in nine Carry On films, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and On the Fiddle with Sean Connery. She was also known for her theatre work, including Joan Littlewood’s Oh! What A Lovely War and Fings Ain’t Wot They Used To Be. But Barbara became best known for her role as pub landlady Peggy Mitchell in the BBC soap EastEnders, about which she said: “The beautiful thing is that ageism just doesn’t exist on EastEnders. The show saved me.”
Scott Mitchell said that his wife would be remembered for the “love, fun, friendship and brightness she brought to all our lives”.
