Funny Women

Comedians aren’t just at risk of cabin fever during this time of social distancing and self-isolation, gig cancellations have meant not just loss of earnings but also fewer chances to try out new material or build audiences. However, being a creative lot, comedians have been flexing their comedy muscles online, using YouTube, Twitch, Twitter and other sites to connect with audiences, new and established alike. To help you get your comedy fix, every week we’ll be putting together a list of projects we’ve spotted online by funny women…

2015 Funny Women Stage Award winner Desiree Burch’s show Desiree’s Coming Early! is now streaming on Soho Theatre On Demand. Filmed at Soho Theatre in November 2019 following a critically-acclaimed run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and directed by Sarah Chew. Comedian and storyteller Desiree Burch was born late, bloomed late, and generally has difficulty with the present moment. At a moment in recent history where decades of societal progress swung right back around to authoritarianism and disintegration, Desiree embarks on a spiritual journey of mythically ridiculous proportions into the Black Rock Desert of Nevada, to figure out how she, and all of us, have gotten here, and maybe, possibly, hopefully, fix the suckiness for us all. Watch the show here!

Currently uninspired to write stand up comedy, 2015 Funny Women Awards finalist Jane Postlethwaite has been working on several projects that still make us laugh, recently Jane found her niche creating fashion shoot parody photographs on Instagram. Jane has shared her take on Elle Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan Magazine and Instyle and recreated the photoshoots of Lady Gaga, Gigi Hadid and Dua Lipa on her Instagram here!

Anna Morris has a video for you if you’re sick of articles telling you what to achieve during Lockdown, if you haven’t been using this time to bake bread, write scripts, read War and Peace or write quizzes for your friends to enjoy via Zoom then watch Anna’s take on Lockdown here!  #bereal!

Comedian Tania Edwards has been keeping her Corona Diaries on Twitter, sharing her experiences and observations during Lockdown; including an incident with fabric softener and some cereal. You can read them here!

We will be back next week with more projects, you can tweet us @funnywomen or contact us on Facebook if you have a project you want us to share…
