2015 Funny Women Awards winner Desiree Burch is a natural storyteller with bundles of energy. And in her latest show, Desiree’s Coming Early! does she has a story for us. Opening the show by reading from a binder, Desiree imparts some facts to us about the history of the IQ test, before dropping the formalities and launching into a tale “that is a fact, this is a story.”
In fact, we are regularly jerked in and out of the story for Desiree to impart facts from a binder, and we all know anything from a binder must be true. It’s a long story and bar ‘the facts’, considering this story involves hallucinogenic drug use at the Burning Man festival, Desiree never really deviates from her path. A path to dick, but isn’t life about the dicks you meet along the way?
A shaggy dog (or shaggy dick?) story, Desiree has enough charisma to keep her audience’s attention, painting vivid pictures, pausing to explain things this predominantly white audience is ignorant of, such as how people of colour feel in a predominantly white room, the concept of the magical negro and how you get around the desert at Burning Man.
In fact, Desiree packs a huge amount into this hour and into this one story in which there is a lot of laughing and learning. You can’t ask for much more.
