Comedians aren’t just at risk of cabin fever during this time of social distancing and self-isolation, gig cancellations have meant not just loss of earnings but also fewer chances to try out new material or build audiences. However, being a creative lot, comedians have been flexing their comedy muscles online, using YouTube, Twitch, Twitter and other sites to connect with audiences, new and established alike. To help you get your comedy fix, every week we’ll be putting together a list of projects we’ve spotted online by funny women…
Union JACK radio has announced the launch of a new 10-part comedic interview series starring some of the country’s greatest athletes and sports stars, and co-hosted by some of the nation’s favourite comedians. Conceived and produced by Offside Productions Media, creator of award-winning football podcast The Offside Rule, the new show entitled The Show Must Go On will deliver a sporting occasion with a comedic twist. Guests confirmed to date include Olympic medalist and Team GB Sailor Luke Patience, Olympic Sprinter Asha Philip, Paralympic athletes Kadeena Cox and Sam Ruddock, Team GB Footballers Leah Williamson and Lucy Bronze, and Racing Driver Jamie Chadwick. In an entertaining twist, all interviews will be co-hosted by a comedian, with confirmed names including Justin Moorhouse, Patrick Monahan, Funny Women Awards winner Zoe Lyons, Paul Sinha and Athena Kugblenu, alongside renowned broadcaster and presenter, Lynsey Hooper.
The Open Soap is an interactive, improvised sitcom created by actors and comedians in isolation and produced by 2013 Funny Women Awards semi-finalist Jasmine Naziha Jones. Helen Duff, Kimberly Wintle, Jasmine Nazhia Jones, Hannah Hutch, Komal Amin, Rebecca Boey, Keshini Misha, Lizzie Muncey, Nina Smith, comedy duo Róisin & Chiara, Brigette Wellbelove and Lydia Mosedale all take part. Stand up comedian Eleanor Conway is bringing her show You May Recognise Me From Tinder to Only Fans, joining other comedians who are taking advantage of the site’s over 18s policy which means she doesn’t have to shy away from certain themes or worry about swearing.
