Funny Women

As the nation prepares to hole up in self-isolation, BBC Radio 2 has your entertainment sorted as it heralds the return of Funny Fortnight featuring two weekends of comedy. Pepperdine and Robinson have created and star one of the programmes featured as part of this fortnight, Always June, a new sitcom delving into the life of eccentric landlady June Pursglove (Pepperdine) and the motley group of lodgers in her seafront lodging house.

With June’s bills mounting up and the house falling into disrepair, self-monikered femme fatale and wannabe business guru, Karen Buckle, (Robinson) has her hopes set on a life away from the boarding house when aspiring novelist Becky (Emma Sidi) arrives. We caught up with Morgana Robinson to find out more…

Funny Women: Tell us about your new BBC Radio show Always June

Morgana Robinson: It’s a story about a wonderful bunch of misfits who live in a B&B by the sea.

FW: What inspired you and Vicki Pepperdine to create this show?

MR: We really wanted to write something together, and have a love for the old sitcoms like Rising Damp. We also wanted to make something that had strong female characters at the forefront.

FW: How did you and Vicki Pepperdine meet?

MR: We met on the set of The Windsors

FW: When you’re collaborating, how do you like to work?

MR: We like to work whilst we sit on a comfy sofa stuffing cake in our mouths. Vicki always “drives” (types).

FW: You play Pippa Middleton in The Windsors, which to do you prefer, playing a famous person or a character?

MR: It varies from person to person. I love playing Natalie Cassidy as much as Gilbert.

FW: Who are your favourite funny women?

MR: Oof.
