Funny Women

Laura Benanti is a fully accredited Broadway Star (Benanti uses the term “star” loosely in the theatre. Sort of the way people in Hollywood use the term “good friend”). Benanti is bringing her comedy show (with original songs), LAURA BENANTI: NOBODY CARES, to Underbelly Boulevard, SOHO from 14th-26th July. Benanti wrote the show for women of all ages (not suitable for children under the age of 14 unless you want to have some very uncomfortable conversations), mothers, and beloved gay men. She will also be thrilled to welcome the husbands and boyfriends dragged to the show against their will.

How did you get into comedy/writing/producing etc?

I started acting on Broadway when I was 18 years old. After 10 Broadway shows and a lot of waiting around for people to write me something I decided to do it myself!

Tell us about your comedy style.

My comedy style is summed up by one of the reviews for my show: “A virtuosic evening of comedic embarrassment”

Where do you get your inspiration from?

My inspiration comes from my personal experience. I’ve had a bit of an unusual path. In my show I discuss my youthful dalliances (and why I call my vagina a “portal to greatness”), my three marriages, motherhood, perimenopause and my path to people pleasing recovery.

What do you think makes great comedy/content/sitcom etc?

I find the laughter of recognition to be really satisfying. It really makes me laugh when I can relate to a feeling someone has had but framed through the lenses of their own experience.

Who are your favourite funny women?

Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Hannah Berner, Hannah Einbender, Lisa Gilroy, Vic Michaelis, Rosebud Baker, Julia Louis Dreyfuss, Wanda Sykes, Ziwe, Zainab Johnson. I could go on!

What do you love about comedy/writing/producing etc?

I love the freedom. The feeling that you can try anything. I love the thrill of saying something out loud for the first time and making people laugh. I love not waiting for some man who’s never made me laugh to write me a joke I’m embarrassed to say.
