Angela Barnes is releasing an audiobook for Audible, The Ugly Truth, inspired by Angela’s 2015 stand up show Come As You Are. In the audiobook, the comedian and BBC Radio 4 presenter will explore her feelings on unattractiveness and investigate body dysmorphia.
Having written about the subject of ugliness in the Guardian in 2013, Angela will revisit the subject and feature conversations with family, friends and figures from the beauty industry, the audiobook will be released later this year.
Sam Bryant, Audible UK’s Head Of Comedy, said: ‘Angela is a fantastic comedian, and has an honest, personal, and timely story to tell in this new Audible Original – and an incredibly engaging way of telling it’
Speaking about the audiobook on Sofie Hagen’s podcast Made of Human Angela said she had felt ugly as a teenager but when she tried to discuss this with her family they wouldn’t hear of it: “What was really going on was dysmorphia. I hated myself, but no-one was letting me say it. So it all just internalised, grew and grew and grew, until it came out sideways in depression and all sorts of other things.”
As a successful comedian who regularly appears on TV in panel shows such as Mock the Week Angela registered her surprise that viewers have tweeted comments such as: “I really fancy that Angela Barnes!” Like many women comedians, Angela gets her share of trolls too who are cruel about her appearance, however, Angela pointed out: “I’m on television as a comedian, not a model.”
Angela hopes to open up a conversation and make talking about the subject easier for people.
