The quadruple award-winning comedy impressionist and classically-trained singer, Jess Robinson is bringing her show The Jess Robinson Experience to Christmas in Leicester Square on on November 17th 2019. The ‘human jukebox’ will be accompanied by a live band for a night of music, comedy and impressions! We caught up with Jess to talk about her show, how busy she is and why there won’t be a hint of panto about this show…
Funny Women: Tell us about your Christmas show The Jess Robinson Experience at Christmas in Leicester Square.
Jess Robinson: I’m so excited to be bringing the Jess Robinson experience to the beautiful Spiegeltent in Leicester Square! It’s full of feelgood songs, big laughs, musical and spoken impressions – and I’m backed by my fabulous live band Jessington world of adventures!
FW: As it’s a Christmas show and you’re multi-talented, is there going to be any hint of panto in this show?
JR: Ha ha ha! NO! Well, not intentionally. Although I love panto, I’m having a year off this Christmas. But there will be all of the warm fuzzy feelings, it’s packed with music and there are some naughty bits to. The show definitely isn’t geared towards children, but I have been known to have a childish sense of humour!
FW: You’ve been incredibly busy this year with a new Edinburgh Fringe show, appearing in Little Voice and the Horrible Histories film and touring with The Guilty Feminist and more! Is a well-earned break next?
JR: Absolutely! But not for a couple of months! I’m appearing on Radio 4’s The Now Show as a semi regular music guest, I’m off to Istanbul comedy festival to do my show there, I got married last week and I’m about to move into a new flat in my beautiful new hometown of Hove. It’s been bonkers. My next break will be my honeymoon. We’re going to Thailand in January and I absolutely can’t wait.
FW: With such a varied CV what’s your favourite thing to do, performance-wise?
JR: It really depends on my mood; I really love the variety of what I do. Today I’m on my way to voice a new animation for Netflix, and I’ve just found out I’ve been booked for Pointless celebrities in a couple of weeks which will be great fun! I guess my favourite thing in the world though, is singing with my band and making people laugh… I’m so proud of this show that I’m bringing to Leicester Square. I will laugh, will feel amazing and you might even shed a tear!
FW: Lastly, who are your favourite funny women?
JR: I’ve been particularly impressed and inspired by some of the wonderful performers I’ve met while touring with The Guilty Feminist. Deborah Francis White is amazing – purely for what she’s created. What a following! I think my favourite funny woman of the moment though, has to be Jessica Fostekew. Our shows are completely different, but I love how personal and brave her show is. Mine is pretty personal to and seeing her put herself out there and be so vulnerable has just inspired me more!
