The Kagools: Cirque du Kagool

The Kagools are a wonderfully talented duo (Nicky Wilkinson and Claire Ford) of agile physical comedy performers. They are one of the best, if not the best, act of the kind I’ve seen perform in my life. Their expressive faces are a treat and they exude joy in a contagious manner.

There’s a section of the show where they use a screen with projections of pre-recorded footage, in conjunction with physical bits on stage that is marvellously fun and very well executed. There are little surprises in the form of face shifting and explosions that are a delight.

Adults and children alike are able to enjoy a show together and the volunteers, picked at random from the audience, are made to feel like the stars of the show. Everyone that gets to jump on stage has got their day made.

It’s very satisfying to see such confident performers take the risks of a show filled with props, with no words, and where the audience can literally make it or break it.

The format works better on a smaller venue, in comparison with the theatre at Patter Hoose where The Kagools: Cirque du Kagool was based at this year’s festival. The big, raised stage of a proper theatre creates a boundary between the show, the performers and the audience they are trying to connect with to generate sparks together.

November Gig Guide

The evenings are getting darker, the temperatures chillier, the fireworks are exploding a fraction too close in the park, and those early Christmas tree decorators are bursting at the seams, which can only mean one thing: November.
