Sometimes it really is all in the delivery. London Hughes walks into the Pleasance Courtyard Attic and delivers a performance that could fill the Apollo. You might think it’s bravado (part of her brand) but as a regular audience member, I think it’s a sign of respect for the audience. Prudey Judies or not, London Hughes is giving you a SHOW.
While the premise, she’s 30 and single, is not original it’s pretty clear that London Hughes is a one-off. After bringing up the question of why is she single, London delves into her history of ‘catching dick’, adding in her maternal family history of catching dick that I don’t think will feature when she inevitably appears on the BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are?
London regales us with tales of moving to Brighton as a teenager with dreams of becoming a ho on the beach, learning to ‘seagull’ and presenting Babestation, before landing a job at CBBC. What’s refreshing is how London refuses to apologise for any past naivete, why should she? She was 18.
Questionable actions are commented upon but London never chastises her past self, instead she focuses on her persistance and what she gained from these experiences. Frankly I’d like this woman to rewrite my CV. This is a brilliantly joyful show from a woman who refuses to compromise and why she is quite right not to.
