Alice Snedden: Self-Titled

Alice is a fresh face to these shores and brings her self-confessed super-confident persona to this year’s Fringe.

With a sold-out run at the New Zealand Comedy Festival behind her, Alice has a firm basis upon which to be confident about this debut show. It’s a heady mix of self-deprecation mixed with self-congratulation.  Right from the get-go with the rock ‘n’ roll lights and rock music (which she took pains to tell us were expensive!), she doesn’t let you get away with missing one moment of the show. I was two minutes late so we all had to sit through the intro again… as did another late-comer after me.

I like this type of comedy swagger.  It’s brave and bold and Alice is focused on making you listen to what she says.  It’s a story of growing up in New Zealand and the twang in her voice is raw and rounded.  I love an accent.

Alice is also kind to her Edinburgh audiences and takes the trouble to explain about the social hierarchy in her homeland.  Who knew that stairs were a status symbol?  In her book, this city must be way up in the social gods!

From dealing with the antics of her feminist mother to the fact that her parents are still sexually active in their seventies, everything is discussed with a wryness that has broad appeal. Schooldays, turning 30 and party tricks – this is a ‘must see’ show.
