Sara Barron’s debut stand-up hour was a great way to start my run at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Described as the “reigning queen of NY’s storytelling”, Sara brings a bit more than that to the table, or the stage if you will. The storytelling is masterfully mixed with jokes, which the audience happily rewarded with non stop laughter.
We’ve both been living in London, after moving from arguably more positive countries than the UK, for the same amount of time, which might mean I relate to her premise of having become a less positive person to a bigger degree than the majority of her audience. However, the possible lack of positivity from the audience at Just the Tonic at the Tron didn’t seem to reflect itself in the cheering and warm reactions presented.
The recounting of people’s use of social media in a very artificial way, the relationship with her now husband and her toddler, and her first incursions in writing and sexuality constitute the bulk of the show, that is as funny as it is sometimes filthy and scatological. Just what I needed to forget the wet welcome to the city!
Sara is very successful in all the interactions with the audience. The first row was kept on their toes throughout the whole show and one lucky person ended up having a starring role in the saga! The apparent earnestness with which she talks about puberty and sexual awakening, the way she feels about her son, how relationships are not as straightforward as everyone portrays them and how all of it is inherently flawed make for an extremely enjoyable hour!
