Here at Funny Women we all love Julie Jepson, when she’s MCing our Brighton Nights show at Komedia we know everyone’s going to have a great time. Nothing fazes Julie, she can handle a heckling hen do or a raucous birthday, so the audience always loves her. This is no different when she is in character for her Brighton Fringe show Randomonium, where we meet three different characters.
She opens with Barcelona-born Juanita Martinez Conchitez Fernandez, a radio star who has come to the UK accompanied by a small bull. Juanita my favourite character of Julie’s and probably the most realised. Juanita set the stage for Shannon Crabsticks, in Shannon Crabsticks Julie introduces us to the idea few entertain I suspect, that a mermaid might be Irish…
Between characters little filmed vignettes were shown, at first I thought this was a device to introduce the next ‘act’ and give Julie time to change, however one vignette showed a bird-watching character with some great lines that never came on stage. Which is a shame as I’d like to have this character and it jarred slightly with the next character. Let’s just say an outdoorsy film featuring nature doesn’t segue naturally into disco…
However Julie is an incredibly charming performer with a sweet wit that has the audience ready to do anything for her. Even participate. Something not every comedian can manage.
Julie Jepson’s Randomonium is at Nowhere Man on Friday 26th May and Friday 2nd June. For tickets and more information click here!
