In a genius move, the National Environmental Research Council recently decided to let the online world have a say in naming their latest £200 million Research Ship and the great British public did not disappoint.
An overwhelming number chose to christen the vessel Boaty McBoatface, with some even threatening to leave the country if they didn’t see it through. Such was the fervour to vote that it caused the website to crash, in a similar fashion to when Beyonce released her latest album, Ellen DeGeneres took that selfie at the Oscars, and other pivotal moments in our rich cultural history.
The research that the ship will undertake in the Antarctic is one of the few areas in which the British are actually leading the world and so choosing the right name to complement this proud fact is essential.
Another area in which we Brits are increasingly at the helm is in celebrating and cultivating female comedy talent, and Funny Women is, of course, co-skippering this movement – navigating unchartered waters, keeping those sexist sharks at bay and now captaining our very own ship with Benefit Cosmetics.
Yep, you read correctly, we will soon be boarding a bright pink, comedy-filled water-cruiser parked at the heart of the city and offering up all things female and funny.
From cabaret nights, to comedy quizzes to straight-up stand up, The Good Ship Benefit will be serving up the very best of female comedy talent.
And with so many hilarious creatives onboard, surely it’s just a matter of time before we vote for a new name… Funny McPinkerton? Friends With Benefits? The Patriarchy Conqueror?
Nope?
Good Ship Benefit it is then…
