I’m sure all of us have, at some point in our lives, been drunkenly eating a takeaway and suddenly wondered:
“Does food know that it’s going to be eaten?”
That alcohol-fuelled train of thought is the main premise of Sausage Party.
Now, this movie may be animated but it’s definitely not for kids. For starters, it’s called ‘Sausage Party’. Before I saw the full trailer, I assumed it to be another story about men on a hungover journey to find themselves and their missing pants.
I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Here’s the trailer. WARNING: this video is not safe for work, or possibly life.
It starts off nice and simple enough. Happy shoppers, happy food, happy animated movie music. With a heck of a twist. From around the minute mark onwards, I watched this with my jaw glued to the floor.
Holy hell, this film is dark. And I think that’s why I love it already. I’m not the kind of person who can watch blood and gore in movies, because it feels too realistic. But seeing little baby carrots get crunched up? Bring it on.
Seth Rogen co-wrote the story and screenplay, and he’s taking the title role: brave frankfurter Frank. This movie is Frank’s story. Just as the lead character in traditional family-friendly animated films is supposed to, he’s heading on an adventure of discovery. Except the discovery is that all food gets eaten or eventually goes off.
One of our faves, Kristen Wiig, is the delightful and sweet voice of Brenda the hot dog bun. There are huge names lending their voices to Sausage Party, including Bill Hader, Edward Norton, Paul Rudd and Michael Cera. You’ll also see Salma Hayek on the cast list – she’s playing Teresa Taco. Blink and you’ll miss her in the trailer, mind…
According to the trailer, Sausage Party hits cinemas in early August. It says the 11th, but IMDB faithfully assures me that here in the UK we’ll be getting the film on the 12th.
