We are getting ready to present a gloriously diverse and global mix of comics as part of the 2016 WoW Festival on Saturday 12th March. We are going to be putting on a show of amazing acts who prove that comedy transcends culture and gender, hosted by BBC broadcaster Gemma Cairney.
Gemma will be joined by So You Think You’re Funny? runner up and BBC Radio New Comedy Award 2015 winner Yuriko Kotani. Yuriko has been delighting audiences with her off beat punchlines across the UK.
2015 Funny Women finalist Sophie Duker impressed us last year with her ability to tackle topics ranging from ’90s TV to cultural appropriation to Beyoncé. And all in leather shorts.
Another Funny Women finalist Sindhu Vee has lived in the Philippines, Lucknow and Delhi. She’s the daughter of a Tamil father and a mother from Uttar Pradesh and studied in Delhi, Oxford, Montreal and Chicago, her husband is Danish, she lives in London, and can probably do your accent! Sindhu isnot long back from touring her show around India!
We’re lucky to be joined by 2015 Funny Women Award winner Desiree Burch, who is a New York-to-London transplant with a very busy schedule! Desiree is a writer, performance artist, actress and comedian, and her full-length solo show, Tar Baby, was awarded a Fringe First Award for new writing at the 2015 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and was also shortlisted for the Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award. Desiree also performs in the cult US hit podcast, Welcome to Night Vale.
Maggy Whitehouse is officially a heretic. As an Independent Catholic priest she challenges conventional Biblical interpretation of faith, as a 59-year-old 2015 Funny Women Awards finalist, we love how she challenges culture’s view of women and age and as the second ever British female radio breakfast presenter she is a pioneer in British broadcasting.
Canadian Mae Martin has been writing and performing comedy since she was 13 and has appeared on Canadian television and radio. Since moving to the UK Mae has performed on Russell Howard’s Good News, ITV2’s Fake Reaction, been nominated for multiple awards and regularly appears on BBC Radio 4.
Rosana Bosanac was born in Croatia but has grown up in both Germany and mainly, Denmark. Rosana made it to the final of the 2015 Funny Women Awards where her performance was labelled by the Independent as ‘spooky poise’ and ‘compelling weirdness’. Look out for Rosana’s upcoming web series!
We will also be running a booth at the festival, so come and say hi to us!
The WoW Festival runs from 8th-13th March 2016 at the Southbank Centre. For more information click here!
