Skit Box and one-upping

Controversy alert: some women have made a comedy sketch about how some women are annoyingly competitive.

Loath as I am to cover yet another Daily Mail story, this isn’t going to be another rant about feminism and people getting it right/wrong. This is, at its heart, a story about comedy.

The video’s by Skit Box, a group of female comedians based in Sydney, Australia. It’s not their first clip by far – a previous send-up of Australian women wearing gym gear for every occasion. Active Wear also stars Ellie Goulding, who has a really admirable poker face. No wonder it’s had over 17 million views across all social media platforms.

The ‘Girls One Upping’ video on YouTube is already close to half a million views. Watch it for yourself:

One of the main criticisms of the clip so far seems to be that it’s just another example of women being bitchy towards other women. Does nobody remember Monty Python’s Flying Circus? They had a pretty regular sketch in which they’d try to outdo the last person with ever less credible claims. It wasn’t about being blokes, it was about personal pride. One-upmanship at its finest. This is, more or less, the same thing. One-upwomanship. But with tank tops and trainers.

And let’s bear in mind Skit Box has also done a two-part series called ‘Bitches Be Cray‘ about some of the deliberately annoying things we do. I have done some of these things, totally knowingly, just to wind someone else up. That’s not being a terrible woman, that’s being a prankster.

You can also find Skit Box on Twitter (because where else would they be but on social media).
