There are lots of female sketch and character acts at this years Fringe and numerous double acts linking hands to cross the comedy abyss to success. You either crash and burn in the style of Thelma and Louise or hone your craft to build something sustainable and universally appealing. So what is the magic ingredient that raises it above the rest?
Rosie Revan and Alice Fennell have that unique chemistry which only comes from living and working so hard together. Their cleverly crafted debut Fringe show, Fan Club, takes you from Lion King parody (love the giraffe) to diva backing singers in a slick, funny and brilliantly worked out show.
I am reminded of early French and Saunders as they have the same way of sending themselves up effortlessly, switching between high and low status and exploiting their all round entertainer ability to maximum effect. From laddish quantum physicists swapping banter at a football match to pushy party planners, life is portrayed in all its comedic dysfunctional glory.
Having seen this in development since Revan and Fennel won the Variety Award in the 2013 Funny Women Awards, I am continually impressed by their commitment to comedic progress. They have taken advice from industry professionals and clearly observed what makes a great sketch show. There is little to fault this show – except that you leave wanting more.
