2014 Funny Women Awards finalist and winner of the 2015 What the Frock Best Newcomer Award Samantha Baines has been very busy  lately. We caught up with her to chat about her new film A Royal Night Out in which she does her best cockney accent…
Samantha Baines
Funny Women: Tell us about the film you’re in, A Royal Night Out.

Samantha Baines: A Royal Night Out tells the story of Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret celebrating with the VE Day crowds, incognito. Its a really fun film with lots of laughs, fab costumes and a marvellous cast including Sarah Gadon, Bel Powley, Jack Reynor, Emily Watson and Rupert Everett. It also has one of my favourite actresses in it Ruth Sheen!

FW: Who do you play?

SB: I play Mary, a cockney girl with a tragic past and I have a couple of scenes with Sarah Gadon (Dracula Untold, Belle) and Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction, What Richard Did).

FW: What was it like to film scenes with Sarah and Jack?

SB: It was brilliant. Sarah is such a professional and really warm and welcoming even though my character in the film isn’t very welcoming towards her! And Jack Reynor is a real gentleman; I did lots of hanging around in the cold with Jack and he’s got a brilliant sense of humour and we had some great laughs on set.

FW: Which do you prefer, fancy film sets or comedy pub nights?

SB: Well on A Royal Night Out I did get my own trailer and people brought me cups of tea which was pretty nice! On a film set there are also no drunk men at the back shouting incoherent expletives BUT you’ve got to love a pub gig! Give me the stench stale beer, the mile long hike to the dirty loo and a performing area that vaguely resembles a stage any day! (p.s. if any casting directors are reading this the answer is fancy film sets, its totally fancy film sets! Yes please to fancy film sets)

FW: When can we see you perform stand up?

SB: I do gigs all over London and at the moment I am trying new jokes for the Edinburgh Fringe. I will be up in Edinburgh in August doing stand up in Sam and Helen: Out There, in my favourite venue Just the Tonic at the Caves. London previews and general gig details are all on my website www.samanthabaines.com

FW: We’ve launched the 2015 Funny Women Awards, as a 2014 Awards finalist any advice for people thinking of entering?

SB: DO IT! Start practising your set, think about what material represents you and what you do (as well as hopefully being funny). The Funny Women Awards are such fun and a brilliant platform for your career. Being a Funny Women Finalist also gave me the confidence to enter other competitions and last month I won one! Just go for it, what have you got to lose?!

FW: Thanks Samantha!
