We’re still waiting on the Brit Awards shortlists to find out whether Dapper Laughs is really going to be nominated as Best Breakthrough Act.
This story blew up in the media as soon as the longlist was announced – which, to be fair, contains every debut single of 2014 that made the Top 40. So that’s over 90 contenders. The opinion-dividing track in question, ‘Proper Moist’, has been added to the list by default. And it made the top 20 when it was released, which makes it a stronger contender than songs which debuted at 21-40.
Yes, people aren’t happy that it’s on the list at all, but that anger’s a tad misplaced. We should really be wondering why it wasn’t deliberately removed instead.
When scandals break, the media is usually pretty hot on removing all traces of the offending person (whether suspected or deliberate) from the public consciousness. TV and radio shows are swiftly edited, print editions are changed for the next run, web pages are updated and so on. Unless the Brits are deliberately courting controversy here, the whole issue should have been nipped in the bud by now.
Will we see Dapper Laughs on the shortlist? After some chats with the rest of the Funny Women team, we think not. This is a case of “she knows” there’s a snowball’s chance in hell. It looked unlikely before the show was cancelled, and it looks even less likely now.
