As many of our lovely readers will have seen, Funny Women are off to Bath Comedy Festival on Friday 5th April with our Sex Lies and Lots of Cake panel discussion and performance format! We’ve been excitedly planning what to do and see while we’re there – and Women on the Make’s Saturday workshop, What Makes Women Laugh?, is right up our street.
Having first performed their sketch comedy back at the 2009 Bath Comedy Festival, Women on the Make (or Catherine Barrett, Hilary Strong and Angela Vick) have been delighting audiences both collectively and individually ever since. They performed their first full-length show, Let Them Eat Cake, at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2011 to packed audiences. In 2012 the troupe hosted a series of events under the title What Makes Women Laugh?, and we’re excited to see them back at the Festival this year with another open workshop for women only.
Women on the Make want to share what they’ve learnt from their comedy adventures, and use their experiences to encourage other women to have a go at being funny. The troupe believes that with so much emphasis on stand-up, the comedy world can often be a very male-driven industry – but often women can have a real gift for character-driven performance. They’re keen to motivate and encourage women of all ages interested in performing or writing comedy and the workshop on the 30th is an ideal opportunity to try sketch writing, improvisation and creating a character, even if you’ve never had a go before.
At Funny Women we’re always big supporters of any events or organizations seeking to nurture female comic talent – and Women on the Make’s workshop sounds like a fun and supportive event not to be missed! If you’re in Bath for the Festival, we highly recommend checking this one out.
