Review – Roisin Conaty: Lifehunter (plus a lesson in comedy fatigue

When I went to see Roisin Conaty, it was my fourth show of the day (five if you count helping run the Funny Women show). Although it was only 8:40pm, virtually mid-afternoon Edinburgh time, I was tired. Not so much physically (although walking uphill for hours a day will do that) but comedically. I was suffering from comedy fatigue.

As I write this I'm peering through a haze of exhaustion and a couple of days in the real world. The main impression I still have of the show is that although I found it funny, I was physically incapable of laughing.

Luckily enough, I took notes on the evening which I have dutifully transcribed below, exactly as they appear in my notebook:

Roisin Conaty

  • Has really good crowd work. Connected with the crowd brilliantly and naturally.
  • Show is about how everyone in life is trying to do the right thing or find the right place to make them happier in life. Roisin just wants a dog.
  • Things that were bad that used to make her happy don't any longer. A lot of material about coming to terms with oneself, especially on entering 30s (a real theme)
  • Internet (technically it looks like 'netrat' but I'm making a guess)
  • Bacon
  • How not to get killed by a goat.
  • Overall quite funny (if anything can ever be funny again). The loosely-themed material flowed easily, and was joke-packed, natural, and extremely relatable.
  • I think I need to see a one-man show about murder or something so I can laugh again.

Hopefully this article serves not only as a review, but a few lessons. Firstly, write the review immediately after seeing a show. Secondly, don't see more than three shows a day. The human funny bone can only endure so much.

What Roisin talked about: Happiness, bad habits, netrat (or internet)
