Georgina Thomas is a writer and performer. She has had sell-out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe and Soho Theatre with her double act, Thick ‘n’ Fast. She has appeared in the Channel 4 comedy skit The B@it and on The Last Leg playing Rachel Reeves. She has also appeared on BBC One, surprising Danny Dyer behind a castle in full medieval dress. She is making her solo debut with magnum opus, Hysterical Soprano, at the Edinburgh Fringe this summer.
How did you get into writing and comedy?
I started writing as an outlet, started performing as an experiment and that just sort of… hasn’t stopped! I have always loved theatre, but comedy came as a delightful accident through writing sketches, and I managed to develop a creative addiction to making people laugh.
Tell us about your comedy or performance style.
I am predominantly a character comedian. My work sits between theatre and comedy, and this time with a little sprinkling of opera. I like to grab my audience by the face and take them on a storytelling journey to a weird little corner of my imagination.
What is your show about?
It’s about realising your dreams, battling your demons, and singing really, really high. It’s a comedy, but also a body-horror existential journey about what happens when you let the demons get in the way of your path to success. It’s also about superstition, side hustles in the occult, and accidentally selling your soul to the devil, all in the pursuit of becoming a classical virtuoso.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
So much of this show, and the characters, are inspired by the world of opera and classical music. Even the structure of some of the joke writing is inspired by classical composition. I always take inspiration from something I feel close to, and it’s an opportunity to show a room of people a mad aspect of my personality that I’ve never shown on stage before.
How does it feel to be performing at / returning to the Fringe?
Like all the best things in life, it’s both thrilling and terrifying. This will be my first endeavour taking up a solo show. I am just really looking forward to the different audiences and getting to perform my show every day!
