Meka Mo is a Queens, New York–born stand-up comedian, Comic to Watch at the New York Comedy Festival, and winner of Best of Fest at the Black Women in Comedy Laff Fest. In 2024 her show 3 Queens of New York earned an award nomination and strong critical praise at Edinburgh Fringe. She returns in 2026 with New York City Dreams, her sharp, fast-paced solo follow-up.
How did you get into comedy/writing/producing etc?
Honestly? It was an accident. I was working in the non-profit sector on poverty reduction initiatives – that was my world. People always told me I was funny but I never really took it seriously or thought much of it. At some point I wanted to take a humour writing class, just to complement my business writing. Maybe start a blog or something. The only class available was stand-up comedy. I took it. And that was the beginning of all of this.
Tell us about your comedy style.
My comedy is observational humour rooted in my own life; the things I’ve seen, the places I’ve been, the moments that made me stop and think “wait, that’s ridiculous.” I explore cultural themes, but you don’t need to be well-read or well-travelled to get it.
The jokes land on their own. That said, if you are a worldly observer, someone who’s curious about people and places and how we all collide, you’re going to have a really good time. It’s a worldly show for a worldly audience.
What is your show about?
New York City Dreams is my one-woman show about how being a New Yorker has shaped everything, including what happens when you take that Queens energy somewhere completely unexpected, like India or West Virginia. It’s a fast-paced, laugh-heavy hour that uses New York not as the destination but as the lens. Through punchy jokes and vivid stories, I explore ambition, identity, chaos, and the everyday absurdities of modern life. It’s a love letter to multiculturalism; unfiltered, fearless, and very funny. I’m returning to Edinburgh Fringe after a 2024 run of The Queens of New York.
How does it feel to be returning to the Edinburgh Fringe?
It feels great to be returning to the Edinburgh Fringe. My first run was in 2024 as part of The Queens of New York comedy showcase, and that experience gave me the confidence to come back with my own show. New York City Dreams builds on everything I learned during that first Fringe.
It also feels especially relevant right now, at a time of political upheaval in the United States and around the world. Through comedy, the show offers a New York perspective on how we’re all navigating this moment. I hope audiences leave feeling entertained, but also with a renewed sense of connection and possibility.
Who are the funny women you would recommend seeing at the Edinburgh Fringe this year?
I’d definitely recommend checking out Kemah Bob, Sydney Duncan, and Sydnee Washington. They’re all bringing exciting shows to the Edinburgh Fringe this year, and each has a distinct comedic voice.
