Daisy Doris May

Actor, writer and Drag King Daisy Doris May is returning with an all-new solo comedy drag show, How to Mate: The Ted XXX Talk.

Daisy won Europe’s Biggest Drag King competition Man Up in 2022. Daisy has since been nominated as a SCREENSHOT 2023 finalist and is in development with Sister and South of the River Pictures to develop Steve Porter’s mockumentary. Daisy regularly performs at Soho Theatre, The Box and UK festivals, including The Secret Garden Party, Mighty Hoopla, Glastonbury and Boomtown. Previous corporate clients have included ABSOLUT, MAC Cosmetics and DUREX.

Tell us about your show?

Last year Steve aced feminism. The result? A girlfriend. Now he’s venturing beyond second base and saying yes to love! Join Guildford-ian iPod-DJ for a spicy seminar where you might just find your special someone. Note: Only appropriate for anyone who isn’t afraid of feelings. Live. LOL. Lube.

Do we learn anything from Steve?

Steve himself is someone who has made mistakes and is just out here listenin’, learnin’ and lovin’! Through Steve’s cloud of LYNX Africa that he leaves behind him everywhere he goes, he is someone who is just as vulnerable as the rest of us.

How does it feel to be returning to the Edinburgh Fringe?

Edinburgh was the wildest ride last year and in all honesty, I’m probably still recovering! However, it was a no-brainer that I wanted to return. Meeting creatives from across the world was so inspiring and I learnt so much about Steve and myself in those weeks.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous… it definitely requires a new level of stamina, but I’m here for it.

Have you got any tips for comedians going up to the festival for the first time?

Get involved in your own flyering, you will meet the most wonderful humans out and about. Find the balance between resting and absorbing other people’s art. There will be days where you don’t have it in you to watch other peoples shows, so try and be gentle with yourself!

Who are the funny women you would recommend seeing in Edinburgh this year?

This year I can’t wait to see Rosalie Minnitt, Elf Lyons, Lauren Pattison and the Bellringers.

Daisy Doris Day: How to Mate: The TED XXX Talk, 6-8, 14-18 and 20-24 August at 9.45pm, at Assembly Roxy (Upstairs). Book tickets here.
