Funny Women

Sharing her wild and true story publicly for the first time, Star Stone reveals it all from battling bots, trolls, the online vegan mafia, and the real effects it had on her in this one-woman multimedia comedy show.

Tell us about your show.

Villain Era is a multimedia comedy one-woman show about public shaming and cancel culture. It’s based on a true story of participating in an online-reality competition show in 2019 that went viral with over 17 million views, getting the “villain edit”, and as a result receiving gender based cyber-harassment and bullying for over 5 years.

The show highlights the effects that social media has on our mental health and it also points out the mob mentality that exists online in the comments.

What can people expect when they come to see the show?

There are specific moments built into the show that invite in audience participation similar to a stand-up show where the comedian will do ‘crowd work’. This has some ‘crowd work’ moments and there will be a lot of surprises! It’s a really fun and zany show and we hope you’ll be on the edge of your seats wondering what will happen next!

How does it feel to be performing at the Edinburgh Fringe?

This is a one-woman comedy show and this is the first time I’m bringing a brand new work, Villain Era, to premiere at the Fringe! This allows me to really co-create with an audience. The Fringe is a great space to receive feedback, and even integrate that into your performance. So, as a comedian, I’m looking forward to having that kind of audience interaction every night!

What are key themes or subjects you look for when choosing what comedy show to see at Edinburgh?

I generally look for shows that highlight subjects I care about. I love shows that have a strong and clear social justice message and I also love musical comedy. I do love shows that push boundaries and play with form and style – last year two shows that stood out were Dad Jokes which was performed by a Drag King on a bus and the other was Eloina Hayes’s piece called High Steaks, which was about labialplasty.

Villain Era by Star Stone will be at Greenside, George Street, 17:10 from 2nd to 24th August (not 11th or 18th). Book tickets here.
