We’re thrilled to see Britain’s first ever permanent LGBTQ+ comedy venue set to open in May with 3 shows a week, in North London.
While there are a host of LGBTQ+ comedy nights on the circuit already – Wendy’s House, Comedy Bloomers, and The LOL word, to name but a few – this is the first time that a permanent venue has opened its doors, which feels like a big step and commitment towards creating spaces for both LGBTQ+ acts and audiences to feel welcome, and thrive. And at Funny Women, we’re all about creating and sustaining welcoming spaces in comedy.
Creators of the night include Kate Dale, Jeremy Topp and David Ian, who all believe that there was a bit of a gap in the comedy circuit market, in the shape of a permanent LGBTQ+ friendly night. Ian says:
“We were uncomfortable inviting our queer friends to come and watch us perform because we were taking them into what was essentially a very straight and macho environment, with no guarantee about the type of material they’d hear.
“It made us realise there was a gap in the market – and our community – for a stand-up comedy club that would feel like their space.”
The club will host free nights on Mondays and Tuesdays for new acts, with a paid for Thursday gig hosting bigger, more established acts. The official launch is on Thursday 11th May, kicking us off with acts including Josh Jones, Kathy Maniura, Dee Allum and Ben Pollard.
