Maria Shehata: Hero

At her last Edinburgh Fringe show, Wisdomless, Maria Shehata told audiences about the love story that led her to move from America to the UK. In Hero, things have changed. The love story no longer exists, at least not with the person, as London may have replaced that spot in Maria’s life, and she is not moving back.

In Hero, we’re told about Shehata’s Coptic Christian family and how it’s like to be an Egyptian-American. Turns out it’s all very relatable, at least for a Latin European with a Roman Catholic family. We get to know how it’s like frequently moving houses and sharing a life with different flatmates, getting back to dating after a life changing relationship, and having parents that are constantly in touch.

The story is written out to be sprinkled with an abundance of funny situations and helped along with a fun gimmick, that illustrates some of the points Maria is trying to make. We’re led by an experienced warm and engaging comedian, we want to be friends with and are met by a heartwarming conclusion. I may call her up on the lunch offer!
