Funny Women

This year it is undeniable that talented women writers and performers made their mark the Bafta TV Awards. Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s TV adaptation of the novella Killing Eve swept the board winning Drama series, Jodie Comer tearfully scooping up the award for Leading Actress, Fiona Shaw winning Best Supporting Actress and co-star Sandra Oh also nominated in the Leading Actress category.

Jessica Hynes won Female performance in a Comedy Programme for BBC Four’s There She Goes, against tough competition from This Country’s Daisy May CooperSally4Ever’s Julia Davis and Lesley Manville in Mum. Despite not adding to her Bafta collection this year, Daisy May Cooper still caused a stir (and probably won some hearts) by attending the ceremony in a bin bag dress. The writer and actor said she had donated the money she would have spent on a designer dress to her local food bank.

Notably, women-led shows dominated the Scripted Comedy category. Derry Girls, Mum and Sally4Ever were nominated alongside Stath Lets Flats, with Julia Davis’ Sally4Ever winning the award.
