The actress, writer and comedienne, best known as the lovable Geraldine Granger in The Vicar of Dibley has been voted the person Brits WISH was their greatest chum (ten percent) – with movie heartthrob Tom Hardy coming second with 9 percent of the vote.

In third place came family favourite comic Peter Kay, with Dawn’s French and Saunders co-star Jennifer also making the list in 9th place and Miranda Hart, Ab Fab star Joanna Lumley, and Strictly Come Dancing favourite Stacey Dooley all making the top twenty list.

But at the other end of the scale Roxanne Pallet – who became the nation’s bete noir after her Celeb BB “punchgate” saga with Ryan Thomas was the person we least wanted to be friends with.

Superstar Madonna, former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and GMB host Piers Morgan emerged as people we would least like to have in our social circle, according to poll.

According to the report by Prezzo, in real life, Brits have NINE friends in their social circle, but sadly, we only catch up with our BEST friend a mere eleven times a year.

More than a third (36 percent) wishing they had more regular catch ups with pals, while one in five say they feel lonely when they don’t see their friends.

Reasons for not seeing enough of our real friends emerged as living too far away from them (41 percent), going in different directions (18 percent), while a few have even fallen out over Brexit (3 percent).

Prezzo who commissioned the research of 2,000 Brits, to launch its Fizz and Friends Day on the 8th December (with 25 percent off Prosecco) commented “It’s great to see Dawn French is the person we would most want as our best friend, but the thing that struck us most about the findings is that we do not see our true best friends nearly enough.

“Because of this we have created Fizz and Friends day on 8th December. We want to encourage everyone to use this as an excuse to get a date in the diary to catch up with your friends. Whether you come to Prezzo for a glass of Prosecco or you pop round for an espresso, just make sure you get some quality face to face time.”

The report also looked into what makes the perfect friendship in the modern age – and our true best friends know an average of TWO secrets about them that their other half doesn’t – while 31 percent admit they physically pine after their best chum if they haven’t seen them in a while and 31 percent feel sure they have a telepathic connection to their best friend.

The main signs of a true best friend in the modern age were that you don’t have to see them all the time to be close (58 percent), while 39 percent said not holding a grudge was a true testament to friendship – and 37 percent felt a true BBF should always tell you if you are being an idiot.
