For her show Interdependent Woman Siân Docksey seems to have got her weird in order, if you can do such a thing. Siân welcomes us to her show whilst wearing a captain’s hat and fluorescent orange armbands as sea shanties play. On stage there is a glittery box by some sparkly shoes that I began to think were going to go into the mystery-prop-that-was-never-used file.
Siân’s Belgium-based mother is worried about her, so to convince her that Siân’s comedy career is going well the audience is asked to help keep the ruse going that she is a comedian on a cruise, hence the armbands. Cue some convincing background music and material miles apart from Siân’s usual subjects of politics and LGBTQ issues. To be inclusive of Belgium Siân even included French and Flemish subtitles – she doesn’t speak Flemish but actually as a former Belgian resident I’d say her approximation of the language was pretty accurate.
Mum suitably convinced we can move on to the real show in which Siân describes her life in an LGBTQ very leftie commune where what sounds like a terrible sex party occurred (they all sound terrible to me). In this show Siân has managed to bring more of her vulnerable side to light, making her more likeable as a performer. The show sways between anecdote and very silly jokes. A fun 45 minutes of frolics.
