If I were organising a big night out I think I would want it to start with Abigoliah Schamaun’s Edinburgh Fringe show Do You Know Who I Think I Am? Abigoliah says the show has no theme, which is forbidden in Edinburgh so I would say the theme is confidence. Incredible, bold, unapologetic confidence.
And it’s contagious, you can feel the audience growing in a collective self-assurance. Most stand-ups ask the odd question of their audience, but they usually have to wait longer than Abigoliah to get a response. She repeatedly praises her audience for being good fun and it seems you get back what you put in.
In an hour that begins with an anecdote of when the young Abigoliah realised she had above average confidence, the comedian manages to touch upon the subject of waxing, what her deceased father would find funny (wherever he is), how her boyfriend and she don’t tend to read as straight and pick apart why certain words are taboo.
She even manages to turn the whole ‘explaining the joke’ concept on its head, displaying how well-curated and written this show is. Everyone left that room feeling good, the perfect way to kick off a big night.
