This month Manchester will be home to the fifth annual UK Women in Comedy Festival (WICF), celebrating the fantastic female comedy talent on the international comedy scene. It all kicks off on Thursday 19th October and finishes on Sunday 29th October and features more than 50 events across seven different venues! We’ve rounded up some of our top picks of the fest to help you out if you feel spoilt for choice!

2015 Funny Women Awards finalist Jane Postlethwaite’s show The House is on at Gulliver’s on Friday 20th October at 7.00pm, if you like dark character comedy book your tickets here!

We will be holding our 2017 Funny Women Awards heats at Tribeca on Friday 20th, with host Kerry Leigh, Monday 23rd with Allyson June Smith, Wednesday 25th with Hayley Ellis hosting, Thursday 26th with Rachel Fairburn and Friday 27th October with Annette Fagon at 8.00pm. Catch the new stars of comedy before they hit the big time!

If you fancy testing our your own comedy muscles in a safe and fun environment then on Saturday 21nd and Sunday 22nd October at 2.00pm we are bringing our scratch workshop and show Time of the Month to Tribeca.

Kiri Pritchard-McLean has a work in progress called Non-Offending Comedian at Tribeca on Saturday 21st October at 7.00pm and down at the Castle Hotel Hayley Ellis will be putting on her show Mermaid on Friday 20th October at 8.30pm!

If you like one liners you’ll love Adele Cliff’s show Cliff Notes at Tribeca at 8.30pm on Saturday 21st October. Fancy a bit of late night ‘crabaret’? Then don’t miss Cheekykita at 10.00pm at Tribeca on Saturday 21st October. Katie Pritchard is bringing Hurricane Katie to Tribeca on Sunday 22nd October at 10pm.

We’re so pleased to see Luisa Omielan at the festival, this show will consist of new material as some routines from the show Am I Right Ladies are difficult for Luisa to perform after the sad passing of her mother. Luisa will be at the Frog and Bucket Comedy Club on Tuesday 24th and Wednesday 25th October at 8.00pm.

Barbara Nice: Raffle! is at the Waterside Arts Centre on Wednesday 24th October at 7.30pm and Her Majesty Rachel Fairburn is gracing Gullivers with her presence on Friday 27th at 7.00pm.

2015 Funny Women Awards runner up Sarah Keyworth is a Dark Horse at Tribeca on Friday 27th October at 9.30pm and this year’s So You Think You’re Funny winner Maisie Adam is at Gullivers on Saturday 28th October at 7.00pm.

Comedy Shorts Award Entry Requirements

Funny Women NextUp…Comedy Shorts Award

Are you a budding Director? Producer? Screenwriter? Are you collaborating with friends to make a funny video? Then we are looking for YOU!

If you have a short film or sketch that you think is hilarious, then enter your work for our Comedy Shorts Award to be in with a chance of winning some life-changing support and mentoring from comedy professionals.

WHAT KIND OF FILM ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

A 1- 6 minute film that can take the form of anything comical. It’s a great opportunity to show us your creative flair and have fun!

WHO CAN ENTER?

This award is open to all women filmmakers and content developers. The film must be an original narrative created, produced and devised by a woman, or women, although male cast and crew members are allowed.

ARE THERE ANY ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR MY FILM?

Yes – we require all films to be 6 minutes or under, to be entirely original dialogue, to not feature brand logos and most importantly, to only use music with the written consent of the performer and/or publisher either personally or via the PRS system https://www.prsformusic.com/ .

WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH MY FILM?

We will broadcast selected entries on our Funny Women YouTube channel and social media (so keep an eye out) and the top 10 finalists’ films will also hosted on a dedicated Funny Women Comedy Shorts Awards page on our website. We will also broadcast the final 3 entries as part of the grand final night.

HOW IS IT JUDGED?

Films are judged for production, concept, delivery/performance, creativity, writing and overall funniness. The top 10 films are then viewed by an independent judging panel of top television and film industry professionals who will choose one overall winner and two runners up. The final three will be invited to attend the grand final in London on the 23rd September.
